What equipment to use when walking your dog

I would like to start this blog by saying a few words about why I ask everyone to refrain from using hurtful equipment.
The other day, I was walking my dogs and we met a couple with a young, very lively, big and strong dog. It looked like they didn’t have any control, focus or leash manners established. Instead, they had put him on a choking prong collar which led me to make a little video about hurtful dog equipment on my Facebook profile.
These tools are banned in many European countries due to the detrimental effects that they can have on the dog’s welfare and mental health. Needless to say, that I encourage everyone to use the least aversive equipment and be aware that even prong or e-collars do not replace training anyway and can, in the worst case scenario, hurt your dog very badly. If you would like to learn more about why I strongly stand for this, I am happy to discuss this, or you can read more about it here.
Can my front range harness that I use for both of my dogs be interpreted as “aversive”, because it helps me to hold them back from what they would like to do? Yes, it could.
But is it equipment that keeps them safe in our human world and the least aversive choice that I can come up with? YES – and that is why I use it. If you would like some more help with what equipment to use when walking your dog, feel free to contact me!
